Preserving the Panji Ceremony & the Ancient Persian Calendar

Some Iranian Zoroastrian communities—including those of Sharifabad (Ardakan, Yazd), Mazraeh Kalantar (Meybod), Zeynabad, and several other settlements—continue to observe religious ceremonies such as the Gahambar, Panjeh Veh, Hirmba, and other rites according to the ancient non-intercalated (non-leap-year) Zoroastrian calendar. This practice reflects their commitment to preserving ancestral religious traditions and customs.

Remaining faithful to these inherited traditions is regarded as a valuable means of strengthening religious identity and providing spiritual tranquility amid the pressures and distractions of modern life. At the same time, observing religious ceremonies according to the officially recognized Zoroastrian calendar, which incorporates leap-year adjustments, can foster greater unity and cohesion within the wider Zoroastrian community. Nevertheless, the preservation of ancient customs continues to hold profound historical, cultural, and religious significance.

One of the most important observances maintained under the ancient calendar is Panjeh Veh (the Great Panjeh). According to the traditional reckoning, it begins on 21 Tir, corresponding to the Ahunavad and Gathabyo days of the ancient calendar. The ceremony is observed in Sharifabad, Mazraeh Kalantar, and other communities that continue to follow the non-intercalated calendar. It coincides with Hamaspathmaedaya, the sixth and final Gahambar of the Zoroastrian year, a festival traditionally associated with the balance of day and night and the completion of the annual cycle. The observances continue for five days, concluding on 25 Tir, and culminate at dawn on 26 Tir with the traditional lighting of sacred fires on rooftops to welcome the New Year according to the ancient calendar.

The rituals performed during Panjeh Veh are conducted in essentially the same manner as those observed during the sixth Gahambar under the intercalated (leap-year) Zoroastrian calendar. The rooftop fire-lighting ceremony symbolizes the arrival of Nowruz as calculated according to the ancient non-leap calendar.

The Zoroastrian religious calendar, like Iran's modern national calendar, is solar in nature. It consists of twelve months, each comprising thirty days, with the names of both the months and the days derived from the Avesta.

Following the thirtieth day of the month of Esfand are five supplementary days known as Behizak Panjeh or Khamsa-ye Mostaraqeh ("the Five Supplementary Days"). Each of these five days bears a distinct name derived from the Gathas of Asho Zarathustra.

The thirty days of every Zoroastrian month are named as follows:

1. Dadvah Ahura Mazdā, 2. Vohu Manah, 3. AÅ”a VahiÅ”ta, 4. KhÅ”athra Vairya, 5. Spenta Ārmaiti, 6. Haurvatāt, 7. Ameretāt, 8. Dadvah Ahura Mazdā, 9. Ātar, 10. Āpō, 11. Hvar, 12. Māh, 13. TiÅ”trya, 14. GeuÅ” Urvan, 15. Dadvah Ahura Mazdā, 16. Mithra, 17. SraoÅ”a, 18. RaÅ”nu, 19. FravaÅ”ayō, 20. Verethragna, 21. Rāman, 22. Vāta, 23. Dadvah Ahura Mazdā, 24. Daēna, 25. AÅ”i, 26. ArÅ”tāt, 27. Asmān, 28. Zam, 29. Manthra Spenta, 30. Anaghra Raočā.

Following legislation enacted by the Iranian National Consultative Assembly on 11 Farvardin 1304 (1925 CE), the structure of Iran's national calendar was revised: the first six months were assigned thirty-one days, the following five months thirty days each, and Esfand twenty-nine days, or thirty in leap years.

In the intercalated version of the Zoroastrian calendar, the additional leap day is known as Avardad (or Ovardad), literally meaning the "extra day." Historically, Zoroastrians maintained the accuracy of their calendar by introducing an intercalary month every 120 years. Following the fall of the Sasanian Empire and the social and political upheavals that accompanied the Arab conquest of Iran, this practice gradually fell into disuse and was eventually forgotten. Consequently, many religious observances continued to be preserved according to the older non-intercalated calendar, a tradition that survives in several communities to this day.

With the development of modern astronomy and mathematical methods, the Zoroastrian religious calendar has once again been accurately regulated. As a result, the majority of Zoroastrians now observe their religious festivals and ceremonies according to their correct astronomical dates. At the same time, the efforts of earlier generations to preserve these ancient traditions under difficult historical circumstances remain an enduring legacy deserving of recognition and appreciation.
