Asha (/ˈʌʃə/) or arta (/ˈɑːrtə/; Avestan: 𐬀𐬴𐬀 Aṣ̌a / Arta) is a Zoroastrian concept with a complex and highly nuanced range of meaning. It is commonly summarized in accord with its contextual implications of 'truth' and 'right' (or 'righteousness'), 'order' and 'right working'. It is of cardinal importance to Zoroastrian theology and doctrine. In the moral sphere, aṣ̌a/arta represents what has been called "the decisive confessional concept of Zoroastrianism". The opposite of aṣ̌a is druj (Avestan: 𐬛𐬭𐬎𐬘, lit. 'deceit, falsehood').

Its Old Persian equivalent is arta-. In Middle Iranian languages the term appears as ard-.

The word is also the proper name of the divinity Asha, the Amesha Spenta that is the hypostasis or “genius” of "Truth" or "Righteousness". In the Younger Avesta, this figure is more commonly referred to as Asha Vahishta (Aṣ̌a Vahišta, Arta Vahišta), "Best Truth". The Middle Persian descendant is Ashawahist or Ardwahisht; New Persian Ardibehesht or Ordibehesht. In the Gathas—the oldest texts of Zoroastrianism, thought to have been composed by Zoroaster—it is seldom possible to distinguish between moral principle and the divinity. Later texts consistently use the 'Best' epithet when speaking of the Amesha Spenta; only once in the Gathas is 'best' an adjective of aṣ̌a/arta. The Ashem Vohu, which is one of the most important prayers Zoroastrianism is dedicated to Asha.

In a historic and grand event, nearly 1,000 Zoroastrians gathered in Oakville, Ontario, to celebrate the official opening of the new fire temple of the Ontario Zoroastrian Community Foundation. Today's Persian is a modified Middle Persian, and Middle Persian is a modified version of the ancient Persian language, that is, the Persian of the Achaemenid period, fortunately traces of which have remained in the chest of Mount Bisotun. The Mount Bisotun inscription is in a language that is the grandfather of today's Persian language, not another language.

Historical Distortions

We contend that the encyclopedia contains historical distortions by citing statements attributed to individuals who are no longer alive as historical and scientific evidence, despite the inability to verify or challenge such claims directly.

Use of Unverified Statements as Sources

In our view, such statements may function in a manner similar to religious traditions or narrations that continue to be cited despite the absence of authentic documentary evidence. We argue that, without genuine historical documentation, these statements should not continue to be presented as authoritative sources.

Mixing Unrelated Baháʼí and Ancient Persia Materials

We object to what we consider the merging of unrelated Baháʼí subjects with Ancient Iran, despite these belonging to entirely different historical periods. We further note that the Baháʼí Faith is a modern religious movement, making such associations particularly problematic from our perspective. We also contend that many of these materials appear in the encyclopedia without sufficient sourcing and are therefore, in our opinion, lacking in credibility.
