WASHINGTON — Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine has privately expressed concern over the consequences of further escalating the conflict with Iran and has called for a possible way to bring the war to an end, according to reports.
Caine has reportedly raised his concerns in private discussions with senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, warning that the military options available for further escalation could carry significant risks and may not achieve Washington’s stated objectives.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the senior US general has been seeking an “off-ramp” from the conflict as the war enters a critical stage. Caine has reportedly discussed the issue with several senior Trump administration officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice-President JD Vance.
The discussions reportedly reflect growing concern within parts of the administration over the limits of continued military action. Sources said Caine believes that further air strikes alone are unlikely to deliver the political and strategic outcome sought by President Trump, while an expansion of the conflict could produce unintended consequences.
The reported position comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran and growing uncertainty over how the conflict can be brought to an end. Previous assessments by US officials have also highlighted the risks posed to American forces and commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Caine has previously warned about Iran’s ability to threaten maritime traffic and US military assets in the region. In May, he said Iranian forces had attacked commercial vessels and US forces while remaining below the threshold that would trigger a return to major combat operations.
The general’s reported efforts to explore an exit from the war come despite President Trump’s continued emphasis on military pressure against Iran. The administration has previously maintained that US military operations were intended to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, while also leaving open the possibility of diplomacy.
The reported discussions could therefore signal an increasingly difficult strategic dilemma for Washington: whether to intensify military pressure in an attempt to force Iran into concessions, or seek a diplomatic pathway that could halt the fighting and prevent a wider regional conflict.
Any move towards negotiations would face significant political and military challenges. Nevertheless, Caine’s reported calls for an “off-ramp” suggest that senior US military officials are increasingly focused not only on how the conflict can be fought, but also on how it can ultimately be brought to an end.
