Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni (973–c. 1050 CE Persian: ابوریحان محمد بن احمد بیرونی), commonly known as Al-Biruni, was one of the greatest scholars of the medieval world and one of the most important intellectual figures of PERSIA. He was a Persian polymath whose achievements covered astronomy, mathematics, geography, physics, geology, medicine, history, anthropology, comparative religion, and linguistics.
Early Life and Background
Al-Biruni was born in 973 CE near the city of Kath, the capital of Khwarazm (in present-day Uzbekistan). His name al-Biruni is derived from the Persian word "bīrūn", meaning "outside" or "suburb," referring to his birthplace outside the city.
From an early age, he showed exceptional intelligence and curiosity about mathematics and the natural world. He studied under Abu Nasr Mansur, a renowned mathematician and astronomer from the ruling family of Khwarazm, who introduced him to advanced geometry, astronomy, and the works of Greek scientists such as Euclid and Ptolemy.
By his teenage years, Al-Biruni was already conducting astronomical observations. One of his early achievements was calculating the latitude of Kath through solar observations.
Education and Intellectual Development
Al-Biruni lived during a period when Central Asia was a major center of scientific and philosophical activity. He mastered several languages, including:

The political instability of Khwarazm affected Al-Biruni’s life. In 995 CE, conflicts in the region forced him to leave Khwarazm temporarily. He traveled to scientific centers such as Rayy and later returned to his homeland.
After the conquest of Khwarazm by Mahmud of Ghazni in the early 11th century, Al-Biruni was taken to the Ghaznavid court. Although he lived under Mahmud’s rule, he continued his scientific research and gained access to new intellectual environments.
During Mahmud’s campaigns in India, Al-Biruni traveled to the Indian subcontinent. There he studied Indian philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and social customs. His observations resulted in his famous work Kitab al-Hind (The Book of India).
