A Reminder of Resistance in Defence of Persia

SAKHTSAR — Aryobarzan Commemoration Day is observed in remembrance of Aryobarzan, the ancient Iranian commander who became a symbol of resistance against the Macedonian invasion of Persia under Alexander the Great.

Aryobarzan is remembered for his determined defence of the Persian homeland during Alexander’s campaign in the late fourth century BC. Ancient accounts describe how his forces confronted the invading army in the mountainous region of the Persian heartland, seeking to halt the advance towards the centres of the Achaemenid Empire.

Although the Persian resistance was ultimately defeated, Aryobarzan’s name has endured in Iranian historical memory as a symbol of courage, military resistance and devotion to the defence of the homeland.
